Summary of last week:
The students vs. staff basketball game on Tuesday was a huge success!!! The staff barely edged out the students with a stunning come from behind victory!!! It was absolutely fair no matter what the students say…LOL…If you missed out on the game…maybe next year!
Congratulations to the girls tennis team on their first match as they defeated Maricopa High School! Singles Varsity - #1 Emily Ferens won both sets 6-0 and 6-2. #2 Jessica Layton won both sets and one match ended in a 7-5 tiebreaker! #3 Katie Coon won 6-0, 6-2! #4 Leah Miller won both matches with the set score 6-3. 6-2! #5 Lena Palshooeker successfully beat her opponent- set scores were 6-0, 6-1 and #6 Kortni Green played an awesome match winning 6-2, 6-1! Final score 7-2 KNIGHTS WIN! On Wednesday, the girls lost to a very strong Arcadia team, but then bounced back on Thursday to defeat Coronado’s varsity by 7-2 and their JV 6-2.
On the boys side, Maricopa won 6 matches, HHS won 3. It went down to the wire though with the last two doubles matches going all the way to a third set tie-breaker. Yesterday at Coronado H.S. the Higley boy’s tennis team faced an uphill battle. The Knights were missing two key players and found themselves playing in very windy conditions. Michael Hermosillo and Marco Cobos fought hard in both their singles matches and their combined doubles match. They were both playing against higher seeded opponents. Nick St.Clair and Jordan Taylor both played long singles matches. Jordan came out on top of his singles match and Nick barely lost his. The best was yet to come. By the time Nick and Jordan’s doubles match began the wind was blowing even stronger. Add to this that Coronado had their very own cheering section who was standing right along the fence line cheering loudly while the match was in play. Nick and Jordan were behind by several points during the whole match. They were barely hanging on. Nick and Jordan faced three match points and they won them all tying the match up. Two points in a row won by our Knights Jordan Taylor and Nick St.Clair and they literally pulled out a victory from the jaws of defeat. The loud Coronado cheering section was suddenly quiet as Higley won the match!
The Knights baseball teams played Paradise Valley on Tuesday. The varsity team lost in the last inning 2-5, but the JV team won a tough battle 9-8 and the freshman lost 1-10. On Thursday, JV and varsity lost to Coconino, but the freshman team defeated Coconino by a final score of 13 - 3. Starting pitcher, Will Skinner pitched 3 strong innings and Jake Ratledge and Brady Hochhalter each pitched an inning. Strong offensive performances were from Hunter Cruz's 3rd inning deep shot to left center that went all the way to the fence for a home run and Alex Sainz who went 2 for 2 and scored 2 runs. Damien Correa ended the game with an RBI single to drive in the final run of the game. The team would like to thank all of the Higley fans that were out to see the game.
Our girls varsity softball team ended their game against PV after running out of daylight with a 5-5 tie in the 10th. The JV team lost in an all-offensive game 11-19. On Thursday our JV again lost another high scoring game to Coconino 14-21. Tonight our freshman will play their first game.
On Tuesday the Higley boys volleyball team soundly defeated Dysart on the road 3-0. Then on Wednesday the team battled the Norte Dame Saints and were victorious. The game was filled with breath taking excitement. Here are some awesome stats from our huge victory. Captain Anthony Amos had 35 assists, Turner Beall had 12 Kills and 6 digs, Cory Hall had a record 47 receptions, Austin Rollins had 10 kills and 4 Blocks, Westin Christiansen had a personal best game with 4 kills and 2 blocks, Tate Wetzel had 11 kills and 1 block, Dallin Rollins had 8 Kills.
Attention Higley High Basketball Enthusiasts. The Lady Knights are pleased to announce Ryan Jimenez took 2nd place at the All-State 3 Point Shoot-Out Contest at the Tim's Toyota Center last Saturday. Please congratulate her when you see her.
Good luck to Emmanuel Caro Del Castillo who was chosen to wrestle in the State Senior All-Star Wrestling tournament this Sunday at Grand Canyon University at 3:00 PM. Spectators and fans are encouraged to attend! He will be wrestling the 5A1 fourth place finisher to become the best senior in the state at the 145 weight class.
On Saturday the Higley Winter Guard went to Basha HS to compete in a Winter Guard Arizona competition. They had a very strong performance and finished 1st in their division. Congratulations team and good luck as you prepare for your next Competition at Gilbert High School.

FRIDAY KNIGHT HIGLEY HIGH-LIGHTS for the Week of 1/29/10
read article
Summary of last week:
This week was a week of overtimes for two of our teams. The boys basketball team has begun a streak by defeating Coronado on Friday and then Tempe in overtime on Tuesday. Then on Wednesday, the boys soccer team went to overtime against Seton and then finally a shoot out that ended after Brandon Boggs stopped Seton’s 7th kick attempt. Higley won 2-1 and will are waiting to find out if they made the state playoffs.
Girls Soccer ended their regular season play against Seton. Kelsey Ivers scored two goals and Coretta Nolan scored one. The final score was Seton 10 and Higley 3. The girls now have to wait until all other region games are complete to find out if they will make the state play-offs.
The girls JV basketball team won their first game by defeating Tempe 33-29. Leading the way for the Knights are Kelly Payton, Kara Harrison and Hailey Cromer.
Varsity wrestling hosted a 5 way multi meet and defeated McClintock, Saguaro and Cactus Shadows.
A huge congratulations goes out to Dimitri Jones who was chosen as the 3TV Varsity Zone Athlete of the Week for his performance in the overtime win over Tempe. Dimitri scored 41 points including the buzzer beater lay-up in overtime to give the Knights the win. He will be highlighted on tonight’s 10:00 PM broadcast on Channel 3.
Tomorrow morning our very own Higley Spiritline will be competing for a State Championship at Tim’s Toyota Center in Prescott, AZ. They qualified all three teams, including Pom, All-Girl Stunt, and Show Cheer to put them in the running for the All-Around State title. If you can’t make it up to watch them, they will be online live at www.aiaonline365.com competing at 8:12AM, 10:20AM, and noon. Good luck to all our Spiritline athletes!!!
Reminders:
Attention Basketball Fans! Tonight the HHS Knights will be taking on the WFHS Blackhawks. The girls will be playing at Higley and the boys are at Williams Field. Freshman play at 4:00, JV at 5:30 and Varsity at 7:00. Come out and show your support of the Knights by wearing navy!!!
Are you one of those people that laugh at the TV when someone gets hit with something? Then you need to come out and see Friday Knights Live tonight at 7pm. Friday Knights Live is a sketch comedy show much like Saturday Night Live, only different enough that we can't get sued. So come to the HCPA this Friday night at 7pm with $3 if you're a student, $5 if you're an adult. Get ready to laugh!
The yearbook staff is selling the opportunity to have your name and photo in the yearbook index in place of a letter of the alphabet. For example, if your name is John, your photo and your first name would indicate where the J names in the index begin. Each letter of the alphabet costs $20 and it’s first come, first served. The deadline is Friday, February 12th, or until all the letters are gone. Look for the yearbook table at both lunches to buy your slot, or see Mrs. Sabin in room 773.
Next Thursday is the first Thursday in February, so that means we’re celebrating “College Day!” Wear your college gear- t-shirt, jersey, etc. and show your pride.
Are you willing to help the Higley High athletics department win $500 cash? If so, go to http://www.azbloggers.com/varsity/Index.php?page_id=652 and enter the Valley Chevy High School of the Week contest. Come on Higley; vote as many times as you can! The number of entries per student is unlimited. Voting ends each Friday for the weekly contest and Higley can win multiple times!
Spring Sports begin February 8th…Yes, next Monday. If you’re going to try out for baseball, softball, boys volleyball, tennis or track you need to have an athletic packet on file to get your tryout form. You can pick up the athletic packet from the front office. Also, if you have lost or unreturned equipment from a previous sport, you will not be cleared to tryout. See Mrs. Zamucen in the front office to see if you’re on the list. Hurry and get your packets in before February 8th so you can be cleared to tryout.
Juniors and seniors who have not met minimum standards on AIMS are eligible for free AIMS tutoring. See Mrs. Brackett in the counseling office ASAP if you’re interested. Summary of last week:
The boys soccer team played three very close games this week. They came out ahead against McClintock and lost to Coronado and Tempe. The East Sky Region is one of the toughest, so we will continue to wish them well on their way to a regional title.
The girls soccer team played a great game against Tempe on Tuesday. They ended up with the 4-2 victory in overtime. The very next day they had to travel over 6 hours to Page and unfortunately lost 3-6. Scorers for Higley were Kelsey Ivers and Coretta Nolan. Leading defenders of the game were Caitlin Moizer, Sydney Lovell, and Joselyn Hardy.
Girls basketball played one of the best games of the year Friday against Notre Dame. The leading scorer was Jerika Calleros. At the Seton game, defensive player Simone Ellsworth held one of the best players in the state to 13 points and had 5 steals. Ryan Jimenez was the leading scorer. If you haven’t come out to a game yet, try to be there tonight as they take on Maricopa at 7:00 PM. Last time these two teams played, Higley won the away game by 10, so let’s show them a little love at home tonight and cheer them on to another win! Also, be sure to come a little early to watch the exciting boys soccer team as they take on Williams Field at 6:00.
On the boys basketball side, Kelvin Fischer was our leading scorer against Notre Dame and Seton, while AJ Porras and Kyle Gomez were the defensive players of those respective games. The boys will be at Maricopa tonight and are looking to execute a winning game plan!
The Higley Varsity Wrestling Team competed in their first home meet on Wednesday beating both Campo Verde and Maricopa. The Knights fell short just short against McClintock with an opportunity to win it in the last match. Emanuel Caro Del Castillo and Hunter Rojas won all three of their matches by pin. Other wrestlers who went undefeated and won with pins include Marcus Rochna, Josue Sanchez, Zack Yazzie and Logan Norris. Come out to support the varsity wrestling team at the Coolidge Tournament this weekend at Coolidge High.
Congratulations to the girls golf coach, Sarah VanCleave, who was named the East Valley Tribune Girls Golf Coach of the Year!!!
Please join us in congratulating Taylor Desso for placing 3rd in the Apparel and Accessories role play at the DECA Regional conference.

Summary of last week:
Our spirit line traveled to the Fiesta Bowl Pom and Cheer Competition this weekend and came home with a first place Pom trophy, a second place Cheer trophy, and an overall second place trophy for our JV spirit line. Our spirit line is one of the top teams in the state. Be sure to come and see them at all varsity girls and boys basketball games, as well as the state competition in January.
Saturday Night in the Queen Creek Performing Arts Center there was a fierce battle between singing champions from Queen Creek, Williams Field, Combs and Desert Ridge high schools to claim the ultimate victory of East Valley Idol. Though the competition was tough, our own Rachel Kimball with a strong Higley fan base and three incredible songs, dominated the night and claimed the ultimate victory! Rachel Kimball is officially the East Valley Idol!!!!!!!! Thank you to all of the amazing Higley students who attended and supported one of our own, this is definitely an accomplishment to be proud of!
Our girls and boys soccer teams are both exciting and successful. The Higley boys are currently 3rd in the 4A2 State Power Rankings and our girls are 8th. The top 16 teams will make it to the state playoffs, so they can use your support when we get back from break!
Our basketball teams have been so close to wins this week. Each of their games seems to come down to last minute shots, free throws or fouls. The leading scorer against Tempe for the boys was Dimitri Jones and for the girls, Stephanie Arreguin. Over the break you can watch the boys at the McClintok Tourney and the girls at the Valley Christian Tourney.
The Knights wrestlers were off this week, but are enjoying practices in their brand new wrestling room! They will be competing in the prestigious McClintok Tourney this weekend and participating in volunteer work with the children at Mercy Gilbert Hospital on Wednesday. If you would like to donate toys, please contact a wrestler or Coach Idleman or Carmona.
Reminders:
This is the last edition of the High-Lights for 2009. Below you will see the calendar of events through January 8. We encourage you to watch our teams in action over the break and then during our first week back in 2010!

Higley High School participates in the Teen Safe Driver Pledge program sponsored by American Family Insurance. High schools throughout the country compete for cash prizes by encouraging parents and teen drivers to enter into a safe driving agreement. Higley High School families can learn more about the program and enroll at www.teensafedriver.com/pledge. Information also will be presented at basketball games and with the game programs for other winter sports. Agent Eric Jordan will present Higley High School a check for at least $900 at a basketball game this season. Participating schools also can earn $25,000, $10,000 or $5,000 if they are among the top three schools based on the percentage of driving-age students who take the pledge. In addition, individual participants can qualify for prize drawings, regardless of the school’s overall ranking. Those prizes include Nintendo Wiis, iPod Shuffles and iTunes gift cards.
Students should have received their student IDs. Please carry them with you and bring to all events.

Arizona share of new federal foreclosure aid - $125 million
Of the $1.5 billion allotted by the federal government to help states hardest hit by housing bubbles that burst, Arizona will receive $125 million.
Arizona is one of five states to receive the money, all states where home prices have dropped more than 20 percent. The money was divided among the states based on drops in home values, unemployment rates and foreclosure figures. The four other states and the funds they will receive: California, $670 million; Florida, $418 million; Michigan $155 million; and Nevada, $103 million.

Arizona's share of new federal foreclosure funds
The Arizona Housing Department is waiting to hear how much of the $1.5 billion in additional foreclosure aid, announced by President Barack Obama in Las Vegas a few weeks ago, the state will receive.

Foreclosures did fall last month to 4,271, from 4,452 in January. But ...

Flat-earth Obama or politically duplicitous?
Jay Ambrose: For the sake of helping Harry Reid stay in office, President Barack Obama is prepared to renege on his promise to keep faith with science, would happily cost utility customers tons of money and -- last in this list, but hardly least -- scrap the possibility of this country having a robust energy future.
